Promthep Cape Viewpoint (Laem Promthep), located at the southwest corner of Phuket, offers truly stunning views of the south coast, the deep blue Andaman Sea and the nearby islands. With its great panoramic views it's considered to be the best place to watch the sunset over Phuket. The view of the sky as it changes colors from deep reds to almost neon yellows can compete with the best fireworks.

In one direction you'll see the dramatic cape jutting into the sea, and in the other direction there are fantastic views of Nai Harn Beach and Le Royal Phuket Yacht Club. Beyond the cape, you can see Koh Kaeo and in the distance are the Koh Racha islands. Promthep Cape Viewpoint is certainly one of Phuket's best spots for snapping photos and attracts a lot of visitors at sunset.

Promthep Cape also has a lighthouse with an observation level, where the views are even better. On a clear day you can even see the distinctive shapes of the Phi Phi Islands. It is air-conditioned inside and there is no admission fee to the lighthouse, but donations are welcome.

By the car park there is a handicraft shop and a series of stalls that sell snacks and souvenirs. There is also a nice open-air restaurant where you can enjoy some food and drink while watching the sunset.

A visit to Promthep Cape Viewpoint is often combined with a trip to Wat Chalong and Rawai Beach. If you are coming from Wat Chalong, travel along the coast road to Chalong junction and then on to Rawai Beach. From Rawai Beach turn right and go south for about 2 kilometers to get to Promthep Cape Viewpoint.

Kata Viewpoint, sometimes referred to as the Three Bay Viewpoint, or simply Phuket Viewpoint, offers stunning views of the three bays of Kata Noi Beach, Kata Beach and Karon Beach. The view is one of the most famous images of Phuket.

Kata Viewpoint is located along the road between Kata Beach and Nai Harn Beach, just 2 kilometers from Kata Beach. There is a small car park, a few snack outlets and a pavilion where you can sit while admiring the view. If you climb the steps to the top of the pavilion, you have a wonderful view north across three of Phuket's best beaches.

If you're staying in Kata or Karon, the viewpoint is a great stop off on the way to places like Nai Harn Beach, Phromthep Cape and Rawai Beach. You can make it a very nice afternoon's sightseeing in this corner of the island.

Ko Nakkerd Viewpoint and the Big Buddha are located on the top of Nakkerd Hill at an altitude of 350 meters. The views of southern Phuket from here are absolutely magnificent. You can see across Chalong Bay and beyond Cape Panwa. From the other side, you can see Rawai and Promthep Cape. Looking inland, you can see just how green Phuket is and, by contrast, how turquoise its surrounding waters are.

The massive Big Buddha, 45 meters tall with a base diameter of 25 meters, can easily be seen from most locations in South Phuket. You can climb the steps to the base of the Big Buddha, simply walk through the shrine and up the stairs leading to the image. Up here there is also another smaller golden Buddha image, "only" 12 meters tall, making it look like a dwarf compared to the Big Buddha. When you enter here, please remember that this is a religious site, so no beachwear or short skirts.

To get to Ko Nakkerd Viewpoint, drive to Chalong Circle and take the road towards Wat Chalong. The road leading up to the Big Buddha is off Chao Fa Road East. There are many red-and-white signs indicating where it is, you can't miss it. Opening hours: 08:00 19:30. If you want to catch the sunset from one of Thailand's best spots, try to be there before 18:30.

Rang Hill Viewpoint located at the top of Khao Rang, following Khao Sim Bi Road, northwest of Phuket Town offers great views across Phuket Town all the way to the southern coast and islands beyond.

At the top of Rang Hill are a fitness park and a popular jogging route that has the advantage of being shady because of its lush tree canopy. Rang Hill also offers a comfortable expanse of grass for holidaymakers at the top, with a bronze statue of Phraya Ratsada Nupradit - the Governor of Phuket during the reign of King Rama V.

Another reason for visiting Rang Hill Viewpoint, beside the panoramic view of Phuket, are there many hill-top restaurants with standard Thai dishes on the menu, where you can enjoy a romantic dinner while admiring the spectacular views of Phuket City.

If you enter Phuket Town at the Central Festival junction on Wichitsongkram Road then go on to the next set of traffic lights and take the left hand fork on to Mae Luan Road. Follow this road to the next traffic lights and turn left up the hill to the viewpoint.
